All-night Outreaching Team

Teams & Time

The outreaching program, tour the areas where youngsters are known to gather during the night. The teams report for work at 10pm and are on the streets from midnight to 6am. The outreaching workers are responsible for the hotline service which functions seven days a week; 24 hours a day. If youngsters are taken back to a hostel or shelter this is done before 6am and one of the staff will stay with these youngsters until day-time staff come on duty at 8am.

Task

The role of the outreaching worker is not to provide professional or in-depth counseling on the street but to act as a bridge which makes it possible for the youngsters they meet to be brought into contact with professionals who can help.

The outreaching teams are responsible for taking the initiative in seeking out and making initial contact with youngsters who, because they do not get into trouble, do not come to the attention of the police or social workers but who are at risk because they are unable or unwilling to go home at night. Once they have made this contact, the outreaching teams link these young people with counseling services and other professional helpers and agencies.
